Religious Education at Chigwell Row

Intent:

At Chigwell Row Primary School, we believe that it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. Through Religious Education, pupils develop their knowledge of the world faiths, and their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures.

Areas that are the basis for all Religious learning at Chigwell Row are:

  • To know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews.

  • To express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews.

  • To gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews.

  • To respect ideas, religions and worldviews which may differ to our own.

  • To have opportunities to gain cultural capital both within school and in the local community.

Through our curriculum, we hope for children to develop a secure understanding of the knowledge and concepts surrounding RE as well as developing positive attitudes to cultures and beliefs which vary from their own.

Implentation:

Chigwell Row follows a curriculum which ensures that we are teaching about a multitude of religions that enable a progression of learning across the school.

In Early Years the children spend time exploring the religions of Christianity and Judaism in the first two terms. The children think about the celebrated festivals in the Christian calendar, linking this to the celebrations in Judaism. The final term brings this together with exploring special stories and places of a multitude of religions.

Years One and Two build upon this teaching as the children look in more depth at what Christians believe - the children take time to ask ‘Big Questions’ and make connections across religions. The children also learn about Judaism in Year One and are introduced to Islam in Year Two.

These religious topics have been informed by the Agreed Essex Syllabus for RE.

We also have regular assemblies in which local faith groups come to talk with the children. This includes members from All Saint’s Church.

Our Religious Education curriculum is enhanced further with trips to places of worship in our local area. We also welcome guest speakers from different religions and walks of life into our school to allow the children to learn about different faiths first-hand and to build connections. We use the Essex agreed scheme of work as the basis for our curriculum.

Subject Leaders are provided with an additional three planning days per year in addition to their PPA, to plan their curriculum.

Teachers plan a cycle of lessons for Religious Education, which carefully plans for progression and depth, to ensure clear understanding and time to revisit if not.

Enquiry and challenge questions, for pupils to apply their learning in a philosophical/open manner.

Impact:

Our Religious Education Curriculum is high quality, enquiry-based and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes for Religious Education and through pupil discussions about their learning. By the end of Key Stage One, children at Chigwell Row can:

  • Recall and name different beliefs and practises.

  • Retell and suggest meanings to some religious and moral stories.

  • Recognise different symbols and actions linked with religious communities.

  • Ask and respond to questions.

  • Observe and recount different ways of expressing identity and belonging.

  • Notice and respond sensitively to similarities between religions and worldviews.

  • Find out about questions of right and wrong
